In Brief:

    • End of phase one
    • Mid-term review
    • Continuation of the Aidocean mission

End of 1st phase: Started on September 14 in the PukPuk region, the Aidocean first phase ended on September 24 on the island of Lambom / Port Breton in the south-west corner of New Ireland. After ten intense days, the team is taking a 48hr break in Rabaul, New Britain. On the program: a bit of diving, refueling the Golden Dawn, grocery shopping, however also restocking vaccines ”We ran out of vaccines and syringes that were originally planned for two months, finished in 10 days! Fortunately we are able to restock in Kokopo so we can complete the mission,” says the president of the Aidocean mission.

Mid-term review: The target population communicated by the New Ireland health authority was 337 kids under five and Aidocean was to carry out 213 act of immunization during phase one.

In reality, Aidocean saw 367 children and  carried 1025 acts immunization in the first ten days of the campaign. And for the ”numbers” enthusiasts, 1877 vaccines were administered using 752 syringes precisely.

“The result of this first phase is very positive. Of the 15 villages visited, the actual figures far exceed the objectives established by the health authorities,” explains Sébastien Destremau, in charge of establishing the projections for the rest of the mission.

The continuation of the Aidocean mission: The increase in the number of immunizations pose problems. ”One of the big difficulties encountered was mainly the lack of syringes. We had to borrow supplies from the dispensaries and given that the second part of the mission is taking place on the remote islands of Babase and Tanga, we absolutely had to stock accordingly. This has been done today,” continues the President Marine Bayer. We are leaving Rabaul today with 1500 syringes onboard.”
